Ramnath Kovind's announcement is an important mile-stone in fulfilling Babasaheb's dream of caste-free India!
As an activist in student movement, I have been skeptical of the ruling party's decisions. But, today I'm very happy to know about the ruling party's decision to nominate Ramnath Kovind as ruling coalition's candidate for Presidential Elections. While the main-stream media and the people who are only dependent on media as a source of information are taken by surprise and some even tweeted that they never knew a person by this name who is infact current Governor of Bihar! The most important aspect of this decision is understood when we look at the life of Shri. Ramnath. Most politicians belonging to marginalized or minority community mostly use their identity as their only achievement to climb the steps in politics. This is absolutely not the case of this lawyer-turned politician. A person who is highly educated, who cleared the IAS Exams, but left the post to work as a lawyer in Supreme Court. In his journey as an activist fighting for rights of the marginalized sections he joined politics. No criminal case on his name, he went on to contest elections losing twice but still continued his work in improving primary education. As an advocate, Kovind took the lead in providing free legal aid to weaker sections, especially the SC/ST women, and poor and needy girls under the aegis of the Free Legal Aid Society in Delhi. He has also represented India in the United Nations and addressed the UN General Assembly in October, 2002. A son of a farmer with no political background rises to become the Presidential Election without lobbying in party or portraying himself through media, shows the strength of Indian democracy! Babasaheb never wished a Dalit President only because he is Dalit but a deserving person to become President who is also a Dalit. His appointment would bring new confidence among the people of the marginalized community of India, at a point when there are forces to divert their minds towards disruptive means. This could be a major point towards Babasaheb's dream of caste-free India.
Since independence President, PM, Ministers, CM's belonged to the upper caste only. The marginalized communities always felt distrust towards the rest of the society as the majority society still viewed them through the lens of caste division. Even if some-one from the marginalized community managed to cross the road, it was due to the identity politics played by the main-streamed parties. Identity-based political parties from the marginalized communities never managed to gain mass support or reach out to the rest of the society. Between this caste struggle, today's decision would continue the process of Dalit empowerment. Finally, let's thank Dr. Ambedkar's efforts in writing constitution that helped us witnessed this day!
Appeal to Young India to support his candidature!
Jai Bharat! Jai Bheem!
